With less than a week to go before the budget, Matthew and I thought it would be wise to communicate with you further. Given the nature of the press coverage, it would appear that many journalists are having a daily briefing with Rachel Reeves; each day we see headlines foretelling new potential tax rises. We doubt this is actually the case and remind ourselves of that much used line – ‘don’t let the facts get in the way of a good story’. We sense sales figures are the driving force behind the current media narrative more than any factual information. Doom and gloom sells newspapers; news of moderate, unremarkable economic improvement does not.
